Tips & Tricks | How to chose the PERFECT Sunscreen

Choosing the right sunscreen can be an overwhelming task -- or at least I know I used to feel overwhelmed when I had to choose a sunscreen. There are so many brands, so many different types, so many different options that I've ended up wasting money on sunscreens that were truly awful.
I've done some light research on how sunscreen works, and what is best for my skin and I've decided to share that with you. Please feel free to correct me if you find anything wrong on this post -- I'm not in anyway professionally qualified to be making this suggestions but I have a background in science and I have some understanding in how these things work.

SPF is not the only thing that matters!

A good sunscreen should protect you from UVB radiation -- the one that gives you sunburns -- as well as from UVA radiation -- the one that goes deep into your skin causing photo-ageing, hyper-pigmentation, wrinkles, degradation of collagen and also skin cancer.

However, when we look at a sunscreen we usually only the SPF factor. And when you see SPF 30, the 30 basically only refers to the UVB protection factor. There's usually no information about UVA. Here in Europe, the regulations say that UVA protection should be at lest one third of the the UVB protection. This means that a SPF 30 sunscreen is at least a 10 on UVA protection. But if you take a look at any sunscreen bottle, you won't find this information on it because most brands don't descoser it. You know that it has to be at least one third of the SPF and that is it.

Also, when you apply a SPF 30, you know, the SPF starts to go away after a while -- that's why you need to reapply it. And of course the higher the SPF, the slower the decay rate, the better the protection! HOWEVER, there's no need to by sunscreen with extremely high SPF.

Sunscreen with an SPF higher than 70 is generally only slightly better than SPF 50-70. Picking a sunscreen with a SPF 80 or 90 may just cause you to spend extra money for a product that is really no better. As the SPF numbers increase beyond 50, the amount they protect only increases very slightly. For instance, a SPF 50 blocks 98% of UV-B rays, while a SPF 100 blocks 99% of UV-B rays.

Water Resistant is also a bullshit label that brands put on their products to trigger you into buying a more expensive product. As soon as you go into the water, the sunscreen on your skin will loose its strength. You always need to reapply your sunscreen after taking a swim. Always!

Oh and btw, do you know how much product you should apply? We should apply 30 ml of product on your skin and reapply that exact same amount every two hours. 30ml corresponds to one shot-glass. No one really applies that much sunscreen, which means the actual SPF we have on our bodies is lower than advertised. Also, if we applied 30ml every two hours that bottle of sunscreen that usually lasts you the whole summer, would be only enough only for one day.

Different products for different parts of your body.

You should at least have one sunscreen specific for your face and one for your body. And both should be appropriate for your skin type. You can find all kinds of sunscreen, including sunscreen specific for you face even with anti-aging agentes.
Regarding of whatever type of product you chose, I recommend that you chose one with 50+ SPF for your face and at least 30 SPF for your body.

Also, if you have a scar or a skin wound that is recovering, you should always consider applying a hypoallergenic sunscreen right over that patch of skin to help protecting it a little more. New skin is forming, new cells are growing. The skin is trying to heal, and is much more sensitive. So it's much more likely to get sunburned! You can get post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation, which can cause the scar to go from pink to brown AND you can also increase your risk of skin cancer!

It should a product that you enjoy using!

Don't go buying a fancy-schmancy, expensive sunscreen that you can't stand because it has a very intense smell, or because it's hard to apply and leaves you all sticky. You should spend your money on something that you are going to enjoy wearing! It should make your skin feel light and nurtured and protected!

My recommendations. Personally, I really enjoy Vichy's Sunscreen. They are not the cheapest but I think that they are really good, they feel really light on my skin and don't make me all sticky. My favorite line is the Ideal Soleil Bronze, that not only protects you skin but also helps you get tanned faster. Regarding Drugstore brands -- I'm really impressed with the new Garnier Solaire Sensitive Advanced line!

REVIEW | GARNIER Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced Protecting and Hydrating Mist

SPF is very important in our lives. Regardless of being commuting to work in sunny Lisbon or sunbathing in the Caribbean, winter or summer, we know that sun protection should always be in our minds – and most importantly, in our skins!

But we all fail to re-apply, or even apply in the first place SPF because of its inconveniences: stickiness, heaviness and some times interference with your make up. I'm definitely guilty of that! I often don't apply sunscreen in the morning simply because it's an extra step and I don't want to get my hands all greasy.

So I have been on the hunt for the perfect sunscreen. One that takes little space, is easy to apply and that you can take away with you on a daily basis! And I think I've honestly found the most practical SPF around and perfect for us city folks that are always on the run -- and that can also be applied on top of makeup!

Garnier recently launched here in Portugal the Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced Face Protecting and Hydrating Mist with SPF 50 (what a mouthful!). A super light sunscreen that can actually go over makeup!

It's truly amazing: super light and supper efficient. It dries instantly without a hint of heaviness, greasiness or stickiness in sight. And it comes in a tiny tube perfect for caring it around on you hand bag!
You just shake it well, close your eyes and mist away. It's a very fine mist that lightly covers you face, it does not leave a white cast on the skin, and it does not affect the makeup that you may have applied!

The product is defined for sensitive skins, and it has a very very VERY light floral fragrance that just goes away almost instantaneously. Also, because it's a mist, its application make you fell all refreshed! It feels really good when you are out in the sun and you apply this fresh product that not only cools you down but is also protecting your skin!

I've became a huge fan instantly. A handbag sized SPF50 spray that you can use to top up your sun protection is just perfect! It's super practical even if you have kids or you play a lot of outdoor sports!

I would also recommend this product for man that have a bald-spot and don't want to apply regular sunscreen on their head -- because you know, hairs and all. Guys going bald usually have big issues with getting sun burned on the top of their head and I think this product would be just perfect for them!

REVIEW | VASENOL Intensive Care Spray Body Lotion

I think that everybody here already knows that I'm one lazy-ass girl. Specially when it comes to skin care. Although I absolutely love to take care of my skin, and I love to use all these awesome products, I'm extremely lazy. But thank god, some brands think about girls like me. And for me spray-on moisturizer is one of the best innovations ever!
This is the VASENOL Intensive Care Spray Body Lotion. And yes, it's the easiest way to apply moisturizer to your whole body in like two seconds. It is available in a few different fragrances -- I don't wanna lie but I think I saw a vanilla one, and a chocolate one --  but since I'm weird with smells I went, obviously and as usual, for the one without any scent.

This is super easy to apply: You just shake it well, and you spray all over your body. After that you can just lightly rub the product in and you are DONE. It honestly takes 1 minute. It's a very light mist, really small particles that gently coat the areas that you spray. After you rub it in, it dries super-fast and it's not sticky at all.

And actually, this is perfect for summer and amazing for traveling, since there's virtually zero chance this will get open on your suit case and leave your clothes full of moisturizer...

EVIAN Brumisateur Facial Spray

If you have never used a facial mist before, you've been missing out on something good.
It's a great way to quickly rehydrate your parched, dried skin, or even to set your makeup.

My favorite is definitely the Evian Brumisateur Facial Spray and this has been a stable on my beach bag. I like to use it to refresh my skin when I'm just sun-bathing. It's a spray, so I just mist my face, décolletage and chest area, and this leaves me feeling cool and refreshed as it quickly gives back some of the moisture my skin is loosing by standing under the sun.

I've also enjoyed using it as na extra step for cleansing and toning my face, along with my regular skincare routine. It's supposed to help balancing the skin pH because of it's unique mineral balance.

There are other face mists -- or thermal waters -- on the market, but this is the cheapest I've found. And it can be bought at you regular supermarket.

Review | LUSH Dirty Springwash Shower Gel

I know --  I know,  another lush product. I like Lush, you know that. And every time I go to the store I get tempted to get stuff that I have never tried before! They have so many awesome products!

I've not been very adventurous with Lush body washes. Mainly because I really like supermarket brands for this. I love Dove and Nivea -- they're my favorite and the price point is really good! And usually if I want something to shower from Lush I get a piece of Serendipity Soap. But on my last trip to Lush, the girl there sold me this shower gel. It's called Dirty Springwash, and it's a minty fresh shower gel, that makes your skin all tingly, like a cool dip in a mountain spring! It's cool for summer, because it's really refreshing. It has spearmint and menthol crystals, that leave you feeling super invigorated! it's also loaded with sea salt, to help softening your skin! It is truly a shower gel --  it has the consistency of a gel, with just the right thickness. And I love it's color -- it's so beautiful!

I don't know if it's the minty smell, but this makes me feel perfectly fresh and clean. The smell is really intense if you smell it right off the bottle, yes. It almost smells like mint toothpaste, lets be honest. But in the shower, it feels really good. But don't worry, it is in't that overwhelming on your body. It's really refreshing and perfect for a shower on really hot summer day!

Empties #10 | Summer Empties

I know summer is only halfway trough but I already have a bunch of emptied out products that for me are summer staples. A long long time ago I wrote a post about which are my beach essentials -- it was acutally one of my first posts here on the blog! And this choice of products is very much related to those essentials. These are products that I need to have every summer and although I don't get exactly the same stuff every year, but I always gravitate to the same type of products.

- NIVEA SUN Protect & Refresh Sunscreen 30 SPF. On *drugstore* sunscreen, for me, Nivea tops it all. I don't really like the other brands. They smell weird. And this one is my favorite. Is not sticky, it's very light and it's completely transparent on the skin. I never had any problems with it, it does what it's supposed and it's fairly cheap. Will I repurchase it? Probably, but now I already bought something else.

- VASENOL Spray & Go Body Moisturizer Aloe Fresh. I really like this moisturizer for summer. It's a spray on -- which means it's super easy and fast to apply. You can just spray it on and give it a little rub and that's is. And it's aloe. Aloe is great for skin burns, and if you are out in the sun, I think that a moisturizer with aloe it's the best thing to avoid redness! It smells super nice! Just one thing: it doesn't last long... This spray bottle was good for maybe a week and a half of everyday use. But I really like it. Will I repurchase it? I would like to, but I can't seem to find it anywhere! Do you know if it has been discontinued? I've found the plain version and the chocolate version, but this one I just can't find anymore!

- LUSH Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrubs. It's not the first time I talk about this product, neither will be the last. This is a very natural product. The scrub agent is salt. And it has alcohol and limes, which makes it smell like a mojito -- super appropriate for summer, don't you think? I really like it, but it's not a cheap product. It's my all-year-round body scrub, but it is super expensive and I've restrained my self from buying it as often as I would like.Will I repurchase it? Yep Yep!

- MYLABLE Anti Celulite GEL. I wrote a full review about this product a while back. And, yes, this is a repeat! I honestly like it. Does it work wonders? I don't know. Did I felt that my skin was tighter and smoother? Yep! It's good and really nice, specially for how much it costs. Will I repurchase it? Maybe!

Astrophysics For People In A Hurry // Neil deGrass Tayson

I love books like this. Simple books that explain complex concepts for ordinary people to understand. I'm a geek, and I'm interested on this stuff. I understand the math behind it, I know most of the physics concepts involved but it's always nice to read a book written by someone that know so much about space and that yet is able to explain it you in the most simple and captivating way.

If you don't know who Neil deGrass Tayson is, well, I don't know what are you doing with your online life. He is an renown astrophysicist how is also an internet sensation -- with his own meme and all! He often apeares on space related documentaries, he presents Cosmos -- a super cool TV Show that everyone should watch -- and he has a science-y talk show where he invites celebrities and where he tries to intersect pop culture with science. It's a really awesome show. And that is -- more or less -- what he does in this book. He explains how the universe was formed, what's is the speed of the light and why is it a barrier, how we know how many years ago dinosaurs stroll the planet, and many many other super interesting things.

It's a small, short book, easy to read. Perfect for an afternoon at the beach. And look at that cover! It's just stunning!

The worst thing about getting back to work, after taking one week off, is having to wear pants again. Specially with this heat. ARGH.
Happy Monday!

Review | L'Oreal Parisl Elvive Extraordinary Oil

This summer, one of my best friends was this hair oil : L'Oreal Parisl Elvive Extraordinary Oil -- the summer version!

Sun and salt usually make my hair extremely dry -- and this summer I was trying out the L'Oreal Paris Casting Sunkiss Tropical, which is basically bleach in a spray bottle. And my hair really appreciated me using this!

And yes, I know it's almost winter now. But I wanted to keep using this to see if I should add this step to my "hair routine", or if this product is something that I only need during the summer.

First of all: packaging -- I really like the gold-ish transparent bottle. And I think the blue-sky pump just gives it super summer-y feel. I really like it. Oh and yes, it's actually nice that iit comes with a pump -- makes application so much easier and mess free!

This oil is different for other oils I've tried. I don't know if it is a "dry" oil, but for sure feels like it. The texture is slightly different from what I was expecting -- it's really liquid-y, but when you rub it on your hands it feels dry. It doesn't make my hair greasy or sticky, just smoother and looking more nourished. It is absorbed almost immediately. It doesn't even make my hands feel greasy after applying it!

During the summer, I would apply it on the beach -- after letting my hair dry for a while. Now, I'm basically doing the same thing. I use about two/three pumps and I apply it only on the ends of my dry hair -- because that's here I need it the most. It smells really good, but the smell is not overpowering. I can still smell my shampoo after using this.

I really think this helps protecting my hair. I feel like it actually works well against the heat. My hair feels really nice after applying this, and I feel like this is really nourishing my ends.
Totally worth trying out.

Review | L'ORÉAL PARIS Casting Sunkiss Tropical

Do you remember when I tried out the L'Oreal Casting Sunkiss Jelly  and I said I didn't like it?
Well... I decided to give the product another go, but this time I tried the spray-on version.
And this one I really liked!

This is basically the same product as the Sunkiss jelly, except for the fact that it is a much more fluid formula, and that it comes in a spray bottle. For me, this really seals the deal. I mean, it is way easier to apply and way less messy. It's perfect for beach days. You can just spray it on your hair, and just enjoy the sun while this product softly lightens your hair, giving you that beautiful sunkissed look. It's not going to make you blond! On me, it only generated some very natural looking red-ish highlights on my my brown hair. It doesn't even show on camera, but in person is really nice.

I have to say, the smell is a bit awful. It smells like oxygen peroxide which is in fact the main active substance in this product. It does not make your hair stink, but after you apply it, you get a funky chemical smell in the air.

The direct sunlight really helps making this product work. I have to warn you tho, you will run out of product super fast. My little bottle lasted me 5 days, but this will depend, of course, on your usage, on you hair thickness, etc.  And another thing -- this makes the hair super soft and smooth!

I have already bought another bottle and I think I'll continue to use it throughout the summer because I really enjoyed the results! I If you haven't tried it, you definetly should!

Oh, and I've also used it on my arms to help lighting my arm hairs and it worked perfectly!

A Casual Vacancy // JK Rowling

My whole life is in English, I speak English every day, I work in English, I even think in English. So I felt the need to something that I've not done in a long time: to read a book in Portuguese

The English version of this book is titled as "A casual Vacancy", an expression that in Portuguese really has no meaningful translation -- maybe "Vaga Acidental". But I have to admit that the title given to the Portuguese version ("A Sudden Dead") is actually very appropriate -- better than the original in my opinion. And if you've read the book, I think you'd agree. Specially because how the book ends. It's sad and it broke my heart. I loved this book! I couldn't put it down for a second. The way Rowling writes, really makes me connect with the caracteres. It's the same when I was reading Harry Potter. I always feel like I know those people.

Throughout the book there are some really messed up situations. But the end is really rough and completely unexpected. It gets to a point where you think that from there it can't get any worse. You are expecting a turning point, where everything gets better. But that doesn't really happen. There's no happy ending in this book. This is definitely not a kids book. This is harsh, and it makes me so sad to think that all the issues addressed in this story, actually happen! The book describes situations from the world that we live in. After reading this, I understand why JK Rowling created the Harry Potter world, full of magic and wonder. A place to escape.

Let's escape winter | HomeAway

The weather has been dreadful. Rainy and all grey. And I hate this. It makes me so depressed. When I look out the window all that my heart wants is to go away! To travel to a nice warm beach. And just lay in the sun and relax!

Let's imagine for a second that we could do this ok? That we could chose a nice warm sunny place and just leave our busy lives behind and go! Let's plan our trip shall we?
What do you think about Florida Panhandle ? The Sunshine State sounds awesome to spend some quality time! Yes, I can definitely imagine my self just relaxing on St. George Island, maybe going to Disney World!

As for accommodation... Well HomeAway has so many great vacation places to rent, with so many price points that, tbh, I am sure that I would find there some great options! If you are actually thinking about you holidays and starting to plan them, don't forget to check HomeAway! It's cheaper then a hotel and you are renting a whole house, which gives you the freedom to have your won space, make your food, and have no schedules! Something that annoys me when going to hotels is having to respect the meals schedules -- like breakfast is only until 10 am or lunch only until 14h. And I just hate having to worry about that!

But now, the hardest thing --  what to pack! It is always hard to decide what to take! But I have a few essentials that I cannot live without and that I have to take with me! Of curse I'm not showing you the obvious stuf but a few awesome things that I think are a necessity for some great holidays!

(1) A nice summery colorful flowy jumpsuit. Good for going to the beach but also nice enough to walk around with. And of course, super comfy! For me soft tie-dye pastel colors just scream summer and beach! Love it! -- HERE

(2) A nice backpack to carry  all my stuff with me! I think that the Herschel Classic Retreat Backpack in khaki is just amazing! For me it screams summer adventures! -- HERE

(3) An amazing beach towel is also something that I need with me. This ones by Vertty are just the coolest ones I've seen! First they have a really unique shape! Also, they have a waterproof  pocket for you to keep your phone or keys always dry! I love the Coral one! -- HERE

(4) My JBL Clip+ Bluetooth Speaker is also something good to have on hand! It's great to listen to some music, in the beach -- since it's splash proof -- or in the morning when I am getting ready! -- HERE

(5) We cannot forget about sun protection! My favorite brand for sunscreen is from Vichy and I always use SPF 30 for my body and SPF 50 for my face. For my lips, I like EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm with SPF15 in Sweet Mint!

I hope you liked it! Let me know, in the comments, what would you pack for escaping the winter? And don't forget to visit HomeAway!

I dont think I need to make a review about it -- every blogger, youtuber has already done one and the whole world already knows how great this little pink -- money sucking -- sponges are!

I am still having coffee at home -- with all the money I used to spend on coffee every week I could buy hmm maybe 3 beutyblenders! I have to say, it is good but it is not the same -- but hey at least i feel like i am doing something right by saving me some pocket money!

My brand new addiction -- Badoit Sparkling water! Yumm! I take it everywhere with me! I is really becoming an addiciond -- Maybe i should call TLC to be in the next season of "My strange addiction"! LOL JK; that was a really bad show

 Also I went for the first time to Chipotle! Omg it is so good! I had never been there before, but i had heard great things and it is so great! And their margaritas OMG so refreshing and tasty! Definitely coming back!

Have been to Chiptole? Do you love it? I know I have lots of people here that are not from the US and I am curious, are there a Chipotle where you live?
What is your favorite combination? I tried the spicy chicken but I am definitely going to try the other meats next time! And also -- tacos! They looked so good!   Let me know if they are worth it!

I hope your week was better then mine :) Have a nice day

Beach essentials + Giveaway!!! [CLOSED]

I am a beach person -- I love the beach, the sun, the ocean. I used to spend all summer in the south of the country, going to the beach every single day -- spending all day at the beach! This year, I have to work -- The perks of growing up!

I will not have holidays, but you will! So I am going to show you my beach essentials! I cannot live in the summer without this stuff!

Lets start with Sunscreen -- I use it everyday if going to the beach or not! Currently my favorite one are from VICHY but I am always trying different ones.  One thing I don't change -- the SPF! 50 for the face, 30 for the body -- always! And I apply it several times a day: before leaving the house and every time after going to the water. For the body I prefer a spray bottle - it is just super simple and easy! - and for the face I always use lotion - it is kinda weird to spray my face, I don't like it! [Also, do not forget to put sunscreen on the top of your feet! People always forget!

Something that I always take with me to the beach are also some essential oils -- it helps to keep my skin moisturized and it helps me get a nice bright tan! I am IN LOVE with this NUXE Huile Prodigieuse - it is so worth the money! Let me know in the comments if you would like a full review!

Lip Balm! You need Lip Balm to keep your lips yummy! This EOS lip balm in Strawberry Sorbet is my favorite! It even has SPF 15, and it tastes so so good!

The last thing you cannot forget for the summer is some nice moisturizer or after sun lotion to put after the shower. I am using this one now, from Neutrogena. I really like it -- it's milky and soft and your skin doesn't get all sticky.

And of course you need a cute, summer backpack to take all your stuff with you to the beach! I recently bought this one -- it is just a pink plastic backpack -- super 90's style. Bought it on ebay -- no specific brand -- but it is just so adorable!

~~~~~GIVEAWAY~~~~
I am giving away this two EOS lip balms! To enter the giveaway you just have to leave a comment telling me what are your on this post! Please leave your e-mail in the comment so I can contact you if you win!
4th of July Fireworks Nails
Okey, first i have to say this -- it is so hot here! OMG I just can't handle this heat and worst ... i can't wear any make up beacuse it just melts on my face !
 Yesterday I went to a 4th of July bbq and i wanted to -- you know --get in the sprit, so I decided to do some 4th of July fireworks inpired nails!
I do not have perfect nails -- in fact i used to bite my nails until like one year ago and they have a super awkward shapes.. but if they are painted with some nice opaque color they look fine. I am also not good at doing any nail art at all -- i even have issues just painting my right hand! I just tried to do something easy and fun!
So I used the 3 nail polishes I am showing you! The first is just a nice bright red from LOLLIPOPS called "Voyage á Paris", then on top I added this cool ciate "Need for tweed".
I am so in love with this nail polish! It has some golden strains, some light blue ones and some royal blue -- i thought it looked just so great with the red! The last is just a top coat "gel effect". It is a bit thicker and it gives great shine, and it inda protects the little strains from coming off.
I have been trying to take a picture of the final result -- yes a picture of my falanges-- but it just doesn't come out right :(
Hope y'all had a great weekend and an awesome 4th of July <3
